Forest Kindergarten
Forest Kindergarten Certified Teachers
Our PreK & Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Hornor and Ms. Nash are both certified Forest Kindergarten teachers who are experienced at creating immersive outdoor learning experiences for young children. They are passionate about blending traditional early childhood education with nature-based pedagogy, fostering physical, emotional, and cognitive development through hands-on activities in natural settings. The outdoor classroom at Carman is developed to be both a neutral and directed space that allows students to create their own activities as well as to participate in traditional pursuits such as building, gardening, composting, etc. There are also two buildings which function as classroom spaces outside so that anything can be taught in nature!
Students excel in our hybrid program, where they engage with the natural environment daily, often on their own terms. This opportunity to explore independently and engage in guided explorations encourages curiosity, creativity, and a deep connection to nature. The teachers' expertise ensures that the learning experiences are safe, inclusive, and aligned with developmental milestones, making Carman a place where all children can thrive.
Environmental Education Framework
One of the most unique aspects of Kindergarten @ Carman is that we are a hybrid forest kindergarten located in an urban environment. We base much of what we do in the outdoor world and provide an environmentally-centered education across all subject areas. This is an interdisciplinary program of science, social studies, math, language arts, and Bible that immerses children in the natural world. Our topics include, but are not limited to: flora, fauna, life-cycles, seasons, weather, conservation, recycling, composting, etc.
Outdoor Classroom
Students engage with nature in our outdoor classroom daily--this transforms learning into an adventurous and dynamic experience that provides context for all future educational experiences. In this setting, students interact directly with their environment, exploring plants, wildlife, and natural phenomena.

Our hands-on approach nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship. Outdoor classrooms provide a multi-sensory learning space where students can observe, ask questions, and discover answers through exploration and experimentation. By incorporating natural elements into education, students develop a deeper appreciation for the environment and a lifelong love of learning.
